Change is always scary.
That’s why I cried at even the thought of leaving my house in Chennai in order
to work in Mumbai. I had landed a job in one of the best accounting firms in
the country. It was a dream job, in India’s financial capital. But I was going
to be alone, in a place I knew nothing about.
I was going to #StartANewLife.
Nonetheless, I put on a
brave face in front of my family and friends. I didn’t want them to know that I
was scared. However, I did share my anxiety with my best friend – Vrinda. I
told her that I was scared to live alone. What if I wasn’t in a good
neighbourhood? I read so much in the newspapers about incidents that happen in
Mumbai. Was it really safe for a girl to live alone in the big city?
Vrinda calmed me down. She
told me about Housing.com. It was a website where one could find decent places
to live at reasonable rates. I browsed the site, and managed to find several
options to choose from. I noticed a small flat in Andheri which seemed to be in
a good neighbourhood. The lessor was a lady who I spoke to over the phone. I
made several inquiries with her, so that I could make an informed decision. I
took the Andheri flat after I was completely satisfied.
I bade farewell to my
friends and family and moved to Mumbai. The flat was amazing. It was exactly as
it had been depicted in the pictures on the website. It was the house of my
dreams. I had two days to settle my affairs before I resumed office. During those
two days I befriended all my neighbours.
I never felt like I was alone.
I went to office the next
day, a bit nervous. I was introduced to the team and was made to say a few
words about myself. To my surprise the office environment was very casual.
There were all sorts of people there. People of all ages and cultures were in a
room of two thousand square feet. There were some girls of my age with whom I
could joke around, some old ladies who treated me like their daughter, and even
some cute guys to hit on. I told them all about how nervous I was to come to
Mumbai. They shared with me similar stories about themselves. I was also
surprised that many of them had found places to live in Mumbai thanks to Housing.com.
And that’s the story of
how I overcame my fear, which was unwarranted to begin with. I want to convey
to my readers that you must never be afraid to #StartANewLife. I don’t find
change scary anymore. In fact, I find it rather exciting.
